With freezing temperatures expected in Central Texas this weekend, we wanted to share a few quick reminders to help protect your home, plumbing, and pets. Taking a little time to prepare now can help prevent frozen pipes and costly damage.
Exposed plumbing is most vulnerable during hard freezes. Pipes in exterior walls, garages, crawl spaces, and attics should be insulated, and outdoor faucets should be covered. Be sure to disconnect and drain garden hoses and shut off or protect irrigation systems if applicable.
During extended freezing conditions, allow faucets—especially those on exterior walls—to drip slightly and open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate. If you’ll be away, keep your heat set to a consistent temperature and know where your main water shut-off valve is located in case of an emergency.
Don’t forget your pets—bring them indoors whenever possible, or make sure outdoor animals have warm, dry shelter and unfrozen water.
